A new study by market research firm Newzoo estimates that the French video games market will be worth a total of 3.2 billion euros ($4.51 billion) in 2011, down 10 percent compared to last year. The 2011 French National Gamers Survey and the international Games Market Revenue Report found that 73 percent of this total will be from PC, Mac and console sales, including second-hand sales and digital downloads. Spending on boxed titles will drop to 41 percent of all money spent, for a total of 1.3 billion euros ($1.83 billion), while spending on PC and Mac games, including digital downloads, is expected to rise by 22 percent year-on-year. Elsewhere, online and mobile gaming will make up around 51 percent of all time spent playing games in the country, and 26 percent of total money spent will be on social network games and mobile titles. The report also found that 24 million French gamers spend around 27 million hours playing games every day, while 42 percent of these people spend money on games. Overall, the study noted that the average French gamer owns 3.4 gaming platforms, with 11 percent of French gamers owning seven or more pieces of gaming hardware.
