The Time Capsule

In the midst of game development and publishing, it's important to take a step back and reflect on yourself and your accomplishments. This blog post features an activity I created that celebrates the positive, no matter what stage of life you're in.

As I was cleaning out my desk recently, I stumbled upon an envelope; I decided to open it and read its contents. It turns out that I’d created a “Time Capsule” several years ago as an activity for college students to do self-reflection. For those not familiar with the term, a time capsule is something you create, usually something reminiscent of current events, that you store away and don’t open again until a certain time period has passed. It serves as a sort of preservation activity – to reflect back on the contents and see what's changed in the time since.

This time capsule was essentially a writing exercise – a chance to document how my life was at that moment, to be seen again by my future self in one year. It consists of five parts: gratitude, goal-setting, free writing, strengths, and advice to your future self. It's the New Year – which is typically a chance for a fresh start – and in a year you'll be able to look back at something tangible and see how far you've come. The time capsule is also one of the projects I’m most proud of creating.

So here’s a link to the Time Capsule activity I created. It’s meant to be printed out and completed in a quiet space to really give you the time to think deeply about your current self and what you’d like to accomplish in a year. This is also a good opportunity to reflect on yourself as a game developer and where you’d like to be in the future. The instructions are included in the document, but if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me. (You don’t need a Dropbox account to download the file.) Feel free to share this with your friends, family, and colleagues as well.

Happy New Year!

Best wishes,

Michelle Deco
