Stereoscopic 3D solutions provider TriOviz has purchased the stereoscopic technology activities and team of independent developer Darkworks (Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare). As more home console and PC games offer optional stereoscopic 3D modes, and the number of 3D TVs available on the market increases, TrioViz looks to strengthening its position in this field, as well as its future developments. The acquisition does not include the Parisian studio's game development side, which has shipped multi-platform survival horror titles like Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare and Cold Fear, and is working on Black Death. TrioViz previously partnered with Darkworks to build the "TriOviz for Games" SDK, which is designed to enable developers to integrate 3D features into Xbox 360, PS3, and PC titles in both popular and proprietary engines within days. Shipped games that use the technology include Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Rocksteady Studios's Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Aslym, Epic Games's Gears of War 3, and Liquid Entertainment's Thor: God of Thunder. Along with helping display these titles in stereoscopic 3D on 3D TVs, TriOviz has created and commercially released Inficolor 3D glasses with filtered lenses that allow users to view 3D and play 3D games on 2D HDTVs. Darkworks' middleware team will join TrioViz's group to continue work on the SDK, and help develop "further technology updates and breakthroughs" on TrioViz's roadmap.
