Character Combat Designer, Vicarious Visions

Location: Albany, New York

Vicarious Visions has gained critical acclaim with hit games such as Skylanders Swap Force®, Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure®, Guitar Hero®, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2®. Our games repeatedly push technical boundaries to deliver addictive, immersive gameplay and art that brings favorite characters and worlds to life. Many of our games have multiple playable characters that are at heart of the experience.

A Combat Designer is expected to be able to own any of the many facets character gameplay. From playable character handling and abilities, to the opponents they may encounter including basic AI to one of a kind boss encounters. Balancing, handling, character progression, and creative ability conception all must work together to deliver a solid, crafted experience.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Plan and implement character abilities and handling with fellow designers, animators, programmers and artists.
• Owning system design and balance for player and AI characters.
• Championing your character ideas to your team.
• Write and maintain documentation about your designs as well as stay up-to-date with other designs.
• Create and revises game data using a variety of proprietary and public tools (such as excel and word)
• Manage bug lists, track personal tasks, and alert lead to any changes in planned schedule or tasks
• Actively seek out feedback to improve your work.

The skills & experience we are looking for:

• Strong design sensibilities
• Proficiency with scripting languages
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Ability to analyze problems, critique solutions, and develop plans based on these data.
• 4+ years’ experience in the game industry shipping high quality titles
• A passion for developing for high quality games.
• Familiarity with animation and anatomy is preferred
• A basic understanding of visual design and 2D and/or 3D editing tools; (Photoshop, 3dStudio Max/Maya) is a plus
