Microsoft is marking the first anniversary of the release of its depth-sensing Kinect camera controller by releasing a new beta version for the hardware's Windows SDK. The new beta includes features such as multi-core skeletal tracking that runs up to 20 percent faster, as well as improved accuracy for joint tracking and the ability to unplug the Kinect from a machine without losing work progress. After launching as an Xbox 360 controller in November, Microsoft launched the Kinect for Windows beta SDK this Spring, letting non-commercial users develop code using the Kinect's directional microphone and motion-tracking APIs. Earlier this week, Microsoft announced a Kinect for Business program allowing over 200 "marquee brand" partners including Toyota and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to develop customized applications using the device. Those who want to keep up with news on Microsoft's support for Kinect on Windows can also follow the newly launched Kinect for Windows blog.
