Sony revealed today that independent studio SuperBot is developing a Super Smash Bros.-inspired fighting game starring Sony's legacy PlayStation characters. The Culver City, California-based SuperBot studio comprises nearly 100 industry veterans, many of them with fighting game backgrounds. The studio says its employees were "hand picked" to develop the title, which Sony is calling PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. The game is a multiplayer side-scrolling fighter, with characters available to control from multiple popular PlayStation games, including Kratos from God of War, Parappa the Rapper, Fat Princess and Sly Cooper. It will also feature a number of characters from third-party games that have featured before on PlayStation, said Sony. Taking clear inspiration from Nintendo's own Super Smash Bros. franchise, Battle Royale includes options to start team battles, play tournaments, special event and custom battles, and online brawling. Elsewhere, levels are based on environments from past PlayStation games, while the soundtrack is also drawn from PlayStation game history. Sony describes the game as "a celebration for fans of PlayStation." There is not yet a release window for the game.
