Popular game development tools and middleware are coming to PlayStation 4, Sony Computer Entertainment announced Wednesday during the Game Developers Conference. The company has entered into partnerships to bring GameMaker:Studio from YoYo Games, and MonoGame to the PS4 development ecosystem. SCE also said fully integrated solutions for Unity development on Vita and PS3 is now available, with an early access version for PS4 coming next month. These tools are particularly popular with smaller independent game developers. Sony’s support means developers can have an easier time bringing their games across to PlayStation platforms. GameMaker:Studio for PS4 is a native solution developed jointly between YoYo and SCE, and will be available for free to SCE-licensed game developers. GameMaker was used to make games including Hyper Light Drifter by Heart Machine, Samurai Gunn by Teknopants, Risk of Rain by Hopoo Games, Home by Benjamin Rivers and Nuclear Throne by Vlambeer, among many others. MonoGame was used to make games including Towerfall: Ascension from Matt Makes Games, Mercenary Kings from Tribute Games and Transistor from Supergiant Games. SCE also said it is also releasing its Authoring Tools Framework as a free open source download for game developers on GitHub.
