Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley claimed that Sony is designing Everquest Next to support the Oculus Rift VR headset and hinted at the existence of Sony's own VR headset during a recent "Ask Me Anything" interview on Reddit. "[W]e will support Oculus Rift in some way shape or form," read a post published by Smedley in response to a question about Sony's VR plans. "Probably for no other reason then it's really damn cool and programmers love that stuff." When asked about whether or not the Everquest Next team is experimenting with alternate VR technology, Smedley published a response that seems to suggest Sony is designing a new device to compete with the Oculus Rift. "[H]earing good things about 2 competitors..one of which actually comes from Sony," commented Smedley. "[S]o I'm thinking this is real and we may have our Snowcrash [sic] after all." It's interesting news in light of the fact that Sony has long been rumored to be working on a proprietary virtual reality device that would be debuted in 2014.
