Case Zero, Baby Maker Extreme Lead Xbox Game Downloads In 2010

Microsoft community manager Major Nelson has revealed a list of the most popular downloadable titles on its Xbox Live service in 2010, with Dead Rising 2: Case Zero leading Xbox Live Arcade downloads and Baby Maker Extreme leading Xbox Live Indie Game downloads. Though Microsoft's data only spans the first seven days of release for each downloadable title released over the year, the time period is likely representative of overall sales rankings for the titles. Puzzle platformer Limbo finished second in the XBLA rankings, just ahead of a re-release for Rare's Perfect Dark. The latter title joins X-Men Arcade and Hydro Thunder Hurricane as the only classic re-releases to rank among the top 18 downloads on the service, which is now dominated by original titles. Nelson's data lines up nicely with Gamasutra's Xbox Live Arcade sales estimates for the year which are based on public leaderboard statistics and also include titles released before 2010. Seven of the top 20 Xbox Live Indie Game downloads of the year included Xbox Live Avatars in both the title and the content, including the second through fifth most popular titles. Other notable appearances on the indie download list include retro-ironic RPG Breath of Death VII in 11th place and bullet-hell 'shmup Shoot 1UP in 17th place. Microsoft also ranked the year's most popular retail Xbox 360 titles, as measured by the number of unique players signed on to Xbox Live during the title's first week of availability. A full 13 of the top 20 such titles involved guns in one form or another, including top-ranked Call of Duty: Black Ops. Three sports titles help round out the retail list, while only one Kinect title, pack-in Kinect Advenutres, made an appearance in 15th place.
