Swedish game developer Starbreeze, the studio behind The Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness, said Thursday it signed a "long-term" licensing agreement to use Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3. Starbreeze said the agreement with Epic is multi-year and studio wide. The developer said it will use the popular engine for projects that were currently disclosed. The multiplatform Unreal Engine 3 has been used in dozens of games including Epic's own Gears of War series and Unreal Tournament 3, BioWare's Mass Effect, Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Asylum and Irrational Games' BioShock, among others. Recently, Epic released an iOS version of the engine. Starbreeze, based in Uppsala, Sweden, was founded in 1998 and has around 120 employees. The studio confirmed it is in the midst of a "major production" with Electronic Arts. The studio has been long-rumored to be working on a revival of Bullfrog's classic sci-fi series, Syndicate. Starbreeze's most recent game was 2009's The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.
