Via the weblog of staffer Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb, Microsoft has announced the top ten Xbox 360 games currently being played over Xbox Live for the week of July 17, 2006, as well as the top titles for the the original Xbox being played over the online service. Activision and Infinity Ward's World War II first-person shooter Call of Duty 2 continued its reign as the most played Xbox 360 game over Live, followed by Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Sega's From Software-developed mechanized strategy shooter Chromehounds was third on the chart, beating out 2K Games and Bethesda Softworks' role-playing epic The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Games released by Electronic Arts represented both the fifth and sixth most played Xbox 360 games over Xbox Live for the week with Digital Illusions' next-generation port of Battlefield 2:Modern Combat and the in-house port of the PC strategy title The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II. Square-Enix's MMO Final Fantasy XI ranked seventh on the chart for the platform, followed by 2K Games and Human Head's recently shipped Prey. Microsoft's own Project Gotham Racing 3 continued to cling onto the chart from the ninth spot, while the downloadable demo for the aforementioned Battle for Middle-Earth II rounded out the list as the tenth most played game over Xbox Live for the console. With regards to titles for the original Xbox, Halo 2 remained the most played game over Xbox Live for the week, followed by Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and the Xbox port of Counter-Strike. Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory was the fourth most played Xbox title over Xbox Live for the week, followed by another Ubisoft title, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow. Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 5, the latest entry in the company's perennial soccer series, ranked sixth on the Xbox chart, followed by LucasArts' Star Wars Battlefront II and EA's Madden NFL 2006. The Xbox chart was rounded out for the week by Microsoft's popular racing title Forza Motorsport in ninth.
