Via the weblog of staffer Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb, Microsoft has announced the top ten Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade games currently being played over Xbox Live for the week of October 23, 2006, as well as the top titles for the the original Xbox being played over (or while connected to) the online service. Ubisoft's recently shipped Splinter Cell Double Agent was the most played game over Xbox Live for the week, followed by Activision and Infinity Ward's World War II first-person shooter Call of Duty 2 and the demo for Activision's upcoming Tony Hawk's Project 8. Ghost Recon 3 ranked fourth on the weekly chart, while Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 07 and THQ's Saints Row ranked fifth and sixth respectively. Midway's recent Xbox Live Arcade release of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was the seventh most played game over Xbox Live, followed by Square Enix's online MMORPG Final Fantasy XI. The demo for Splinter Cell Double Agent was the ninth most played Xbox 360 title on the service for the week, while the chart was rounded out by Digital Illusions' next-generation port of Battlefield 2:Modern Combat. Concerning titles released for Xbox Live Arcade specifically, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 ranked as the most played title being played over the service for the week, followed by Q Entertainment's recently released Lumines! Live and popular card game UNO. id Software's seminal first person shooter Doom was the fourth most player arcade title for the week, while Dig Dug and Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting ranked fifth and sixth on the chart. Texas Hold 'em was the seventh most played Xbox Live Arcade title for the week, followed by Geometry Wars Evolved and arcade classic Pac-Man. The weekly chart was capped off by GarageGames' Marble Blast Ultra. Looking to the original Xbox, Halo 2 remained as the most played game over Xbox Live for the week, followed by EA's Battlefield 2:Modern Combat and Madden NFL 07. The Xbox port of Counter-Strike ranked fourth on the list, while Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 5 and Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow took the fifth and sixth positions on the chart. LucasArts' Star Wars Battlefront II ranked seventh on the list, followed by Ubisoft's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Microsoft's popular racing title Forza Motorsport in eight and ninth respectively. The list of original Xbox titles being played over the online service was rounded out by Midway's recently released Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
