Over 1 billion online matches of Halo 3 have been played since the Xbox 360 exclusive’s release in September 2007, according to new data revealed by developer Bungie. The billionth match took place on Saturday February 28th at 6:36on PST, according to a post on Bungie's official website. In the game, four players took part in a 3 minute and 19 second game of the game mode Infection on the Foundry map. Bungie calculates that the total amount of game time spent by all users online equals 64,109 years or over 2 trillion seconds (2,023,153,340,764) -- not including custom and offline games. The total is greater than that of original Xbox title Halo 2, which despite being released in November 2004 has so far only reached 798 million matches. Both titles have proven to be amongst the most regularly played on Xbox Live for their respective consoles. Halo 3’s closest rival on Xbox Live has proven to be Activision’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which developer Infinity Ward revealed in January has seen over 10 million unique online users on Xbox Live. Totals for online playtime are not available, though.
