Sony held a PlayStation Awards event to recognize 2008's top-selling games for the platform in Japan, with major studios and Sony figures such as CEO Kazuo Hirai and honorary chairman and "father of the PlayStation" Ken Kutaragi in attendance With the awards, Sony gave out cash prizes to the winning publishers, according to a Famitsu report translated by game weblog Kotaku. Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (due stateside in spring 2009 as Monster Hunter Freedom Unite) for the PSP, was the only title to pick up a Double Platinum Award. The award, along with ¥2,000,000 ($21,500), is given for games that shipped between two million and three million copies in Japan. Gold Prize Awards, along with ¥500,000 ($5,400), were given for games that shipped between 500,000 and one million copies. Sony awarded five games with the award:
Metal Gear Solid 4 - Konami, PS3 Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - Square Enix, PSP Phantasy Star Portable - Sega, PSP Winning Eleven 2008 - Konami, PS2 Super Robot Taisen Z - Bandai Namco Games, PS2
No titles were given Platinum Awards, which are reserved for PlayStation platform games that ship between one and two million copies.
