New Super Mario Bros Back On Top In Japanese Charts 2

Following the format’s first ever Japanese number one last week, Sony’s PSP has failed to consolidate any kind of revival in Japan, and Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros has again regained its spot atop the Japanese game sales charts.

Following the format’s first ever Japanese number one last week, Sony’s PSP has failed to consolidate any kind of revival in its home country, with hardware sales slipping for the first time in several weeks. Software sales have also dipped, with the only title in the top twenty being last week's top title, Bandai Namco’s SD Gundam G Generation, which has shown none of the longevity of rival Nintendo DS titles. In its absence, New Super Mario Bros. has returned to the top spot, once again selling over 100,000 units - twelve weeks after its initial release. The game is rejoined in the top ten by other perennial best sellers, including the first Brain Training (aka Brain Age) game and Animal Crossing: Wild World. Overall sales are down on the previous week, with the highest new entry being arcade conversion Melty Blood: Act Cadenza, which, following the first-week success of SNK Playmore’s recent The King of Fighters XI, proves that 2D beat ‘em-ups are still a perfectly valid genre in Japan. The only other new entry in the top ten is Konami’s new anime-based karaoke game on the Nintendo DS at number ten. The improvement in Nintendo DS sales comes as hardware stocks have improved, with sales of 197,653 (including 934 of the original version of the console). PSP sales fell by more than 8,000 to 41,289, with the PlayStation 2 up slightly to 26,547 units sold. The Game Boy Advance family of console sold 5,105 units, with the Xbox 360 dropping to 1,204 units and the GameCube up slightly at 940.
