North American television channel Spike TV, the self-proclaimed “First Network for Men”, has revealed the winners of its 2006 VGA Video Game Awards, held in Los Angeles and introduced once again by movie actor Samuel L. Jackson. Bethesda Softworks’ The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on PC and Xbox 360 won a total of five awards on the night, including the top Game of the Year award and the Most Addictive Game award voted by the public. Epic Games’ Gears of War on Xbox 360 was the second biggest winner with four awards, including Best Shooter, Best Graphics and Best Multiplayer Game. The Critics’ Choice Award, for games released after the November 7th cut-off date, went to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on Wii/GameCube. Although the event is oft-criticized by hardcore fans for its irreverent attitude and an audience that often seems disinterested in the subject matter, the televised awards show did feature exclusive new footage of Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Advance Warfighter 2, TNA Wrestling and the CGI intro for World of WarCraft: The Burning Crusade.
