With 2.4 million copies sold worldwide in its first 24 hours, World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade has broken sales records to become the fastest selling PC game in North America and Europe, says Blizzard.
Representatives from Blizzard Entertainment have announced that The Burning Crusade, the first expansion to its enormously successful World of Warcraft MMO, has broken day-one sales records to become the fastest selling PC game in North America and Europe. In its first 24 hours, says Blizzard, The Burning Crusade sold 2.4 million copies across North America and Europe, as part of its worldwide simultaneous release in the two countries, as well as Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, and Australia and New Zealand the following day. The day-one sales were achieved with 1.2 million sales of the game in North America, and 1.1 copies sold in Europe, which, as previously reported, fell just short of toppling PC game sales records for that region by less than a thousand copies. The company says it shipped 4 million copies of the game to retailers worldwide to more than 5,000 stores, many of whom held midnight launches for the game. By the end day-one, Blizzard reports more than than 1.7 million players had upgraded and logged on with the expansion. Said Blizzard president and co-founder Mike Morhaime, “The Burning Crusade has already exceeded even our most ambitious expectations. We’re pleased that so many players are eager to see all of the new content that the expansion has to offer, and we look forward to seeing everyone online as additional players continue to upgrade in the days ahead.”
