Representatives from newly resurrected online publisher Acclaim have revealed to consumer website GameSpot that the company has recently registered its one millionth user of its free to play massively multiplayer online games. Although the company uses the name and logo of the original console publisher it has chosen to focus entirely on online titles, primarily free-to-play South Korean games such as the popular BOTS and 9Dragons. Using a similar model to that common in Korea, revenue is generated via in-game advertising and microtransactions – such as for additional robot parts and equipment in BOTS. The company is now lead by ex-Activision CEO Howard Marks, who acquired the Acclaim name in 2006, and who explained his reasons for the move and his aspirations for the company in a recent Gamasutra interview. Development veteran David Perry, who has been responsible for games ranging from Earthworm Jim to Enter the Matrix, is also closely associated with the company – overseeing the game 2Moons and recently announcing his project, Top Secret, which offers users the chance to contribute ideas to the game and even become director.
