CSO Simtek, a developer of military training simulation software, has announced that the alpha build of Close Combat RAF Regiment is now in testing. Simtek licensed the Close Combat engine from Destineer, the original game's publishers, but are currently at work on a new engine called Synison for future projects. Close Combat RAF Regiment is a tactical decision-making simulator which, upon its completion, will become part of the British Royal Air Force's training program. The RAF commissioned a version of Close Combat in 2005 after seeing Close Combat Marines, and the final product is expected to be delivered in February 2006. The simulator will be used by squads or small teams rather than individual training. Simtek is currently in negotiations with other organizations to develop similar customized tactical decision-making simulators for use in training. Simtek is also working on its own brand of military simulation, called Tactical Reality, which will use the in-development Synison engine. Tactical Reality is being developed expressly to compete with the Close Combat series for commercial and military use, and Simtek is making heavy use of US Marine Corps input to ensure realism in the final product. No scheduled release date for Tactical Reality has yet been announced.
