EA's Probst Expects 'Level Playing Field' This Generation

Outgoing Electronic Arts CEO Larry Probst has predicted that the PlayStation 3 will still emerge as the most popular home console of the new generation, but has predicted that it will do so by a substantially reduced percentage. "We expect that there will be a more level playing field this time around than last time," said Probst at a Morgan Stanley-hosted investor conference, and as reported by the Reuters news agency. "This should not have surprised anyone”, he added. Probst singled out the high price tag of the PlayStation 3 as its primary obstacle to achieving the same level of success as the PS one and PlayStation 2. However, he did comment that: “No one should count Sony out at this point in the game. This is going to be a long race”. Regarding the PlayStation 3’s competitors, Probst indicated that he felt the Wii had got off to a “great start”, restating that Electronic Arts has recently boosted its investment for both the Wii and Nintendo DS. Probst also indicated that Microsoft appears to be gaining market share in the new generation. Although Probst will remain at Electronic Arts as executive chairman, he will be replaced by former COO John Riccitiello on April 2nd.
