PC game download and subscription gaming service GameTap is reportedly shutting down the remainder of its Atlanta offices and refocusing on more modern, downloadable PC games. Joystiq cites a company representative in reporting the service will shut down technical and support offices in Atlanta by the end of October, in favor of a "global support center" based in Europe. GameTap will reportedly maintain its U.S. presence through its San Francisco offices, hiring ten new employees there focused on improving relationships with U.S. partners. The service itself will also reportedly roll out new, 64-bit download technology at the end of the month alongside download offerings for recent PC titles including Assassin's Creed 2, Tomb Raider Underworld and Street Fighter IV. The titles represent a shift away from the service's retro-gaming origins, the representative said, a decision based on statistics showing users playing older games less than those released recently. The representative also suggested the GameTap branding may be dropped altogether, presumably to be subsumed by that of Paris-based download service Metaboli, which purchased a controlling share in GameTap in 2008. Metaboli showed significant revenue growth shortly after the purchase, a sale that resulted in a significant loss for former owner Time Warner.
