Gaming News Round-Up: January 13th, 2005

Today's round-up includes information on Samsung's memory package for the Sony PSP, as well as some sobering news from the creators of America's Army. - Samsung Electronics has begun shipping its multichip package designed for Sony's PSP to the console's manufacturers. The custom package contains 256Mb NAND flash memory as well as mobile DRAM, in order to better store operating system data in the portable game system. According to Samsung, the amount of mobile DRAM in their package makes it the world's fastest memory chip. Sony has shipped roughly 500,000 units of the PSP so far, and Samsung is confident in their ability to gain more customer acceptance as the year progresses. - Firm action against cheaters is expected by publishers of online games, with Blizzard's World Of WarCraft being one of the most recent prime examples. However, the creators of America's Army took some time out recently to remind hackers of the full consequences of any action they may take within the game. "We know who you are, and can track down where you play from," said Phil DeLuca, executive producer of America's Army. "We have incontrovertible proof you did something illegal. The Army is angry, and we're coming for you." If anything can scare hackers straight, this is probably it.
