Research firm Gartner Inc. reports that according to an internal study, Nokia Corp. and Motorola Inc. are increasing their shares of the overall mobile handset market over competitors such as Siemens and Sony Ericsson. The study examined changes in the marketplace during the second quarter of fiscal year 2005, in territories across the globe. Nokia's share rose to 31.9%, up from the 29.6% of Q2 2004, and became #1 in Latin America and #3 in North America, with plans to firm up its weak points in the U.S. market with a new line of phones. Motorola has risen to 17.9% from its Q2 2004 share of 15.7%, and became #1 in North America and #2 in Latin America. Siemens' share, meanwhile, has fallen to the point where the Germany company is selling off its handset division to Benq Corp. of Taiwan. Sony Ericsson has slipped to 6.2% from 6.6%, a small loss that the company is at work reversing with its new camera phones. Overall, the handset market has grown by 22%, with increases in every territory save for Japan.
