With European pre-orders reportedly exceeding 1 million units, the appearance of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue at the top of the UK sales charts has not been a surprise. Created as a halfway house between the full Gran Turimso 5 release due next year and a demo, the budget priced title is also the focus of a new console hardware bundle in Europe. The game has become the fastest selling PlayStation 3 so far in the UK, beating Resistance: Fall of Man, and becoming the nineteenth fastest selling overall on any format. Topping both the combined and individual format charts, the game’s success comes in contrast to a 50 percent drop in sales for Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 in its second week. The only other new entry in the individual formats chart top ten is the Wii version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 – an entirely different product to the other home console versions and already the recipient of positive press coverage in the UK. The highest new entry outside the top ten was Sega and Creative Assembly’s Viking: Battle for Asgard, with the Xbox 360 version debuting at number eleven and the PlayStation 3 version at number twenty-nine. Also new at number twelve is PC expansion pack Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath at number twelve, with the success of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and the PlayStation 3 also propelling MotorStorm back into the charts at number thirteen. Sega’s Wii lightgun compendium The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return enters the charts at number fifteen, while God of War: Chains of Olympus on PSP appears at number twenty - with the franchise continuing to prove much less popular in Europe than North America.
