Introversion Software (Darwinia) has announced that publisher Encore has signed the team for U.S. retail distribution of the developer's critically acclaimed War Games-inspired online multiplayer real-time strategy title, DEFCON. Through a deal fostered by UK distributor Pinnacle, Encore has placed an order for 50,000 boxed copies of the title for distribution, which it says demonstrates the company's "confidence that the game will be well received by the US market." In DEFCON, released last September through Valve's digital distribution network Steam and described by Introversion as "the world's first genocide 'em up," the player takes on the role of a military commander attempting to exterminate the enemy's civilian population while disabling their ability to attack your own. In November of last year, the developer announced it was preparing an amBX-enabled version of the game, as well as it's earlier IGF-winning hybrid action/RTS Darwinia, which also landed retail distribution last year through the Cinemaware Marqee imprint. Said Encore's Jill Griffin, “We are happy to be working with the team at Introversion to bring such a unique and innovative game to retail. There is simply nothing else like it.” Encore has said DEFCON is now available in North American retail outlets at a price of $29.99.
