Square Enix's Dragon Quest IX for Nintendo DS has locked in a massive Japanese launch week, selling 2.3 million copies, with Wii Sports Resort the only other game topping 100,000 copies. According to the latest Media Create-compiled charts, the Level 5-developed RPG, the latest in a long line of the seminal Japanese-created franchise, ended up selling 2.32 million copies in its first week on Japanese store shelves. One of the biggest Japanese game launches in some time, the title sold more than twenty times that of the game in second place, the Wii MotionPlus-bundled Wii Sports Resort from Nintendo, which sold 103,000 units, taking its total to 617,000 units. With eight portable games -- either for DS or PSP -- in the top ten, Japanese game sales continue to be dominated by the handheld, with only two Wii games breaking up the chart somewhat. Many of these games, including Monster Hunter and Pokemon instalments, have been on the charts for some time, too, although newer games like Tomodachi Collection and My Summer Vacation 4 are also on hand to break things up. The full Japanese charts for the week ending July 12th, 2009, are as follows: 1. Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Starry Sky - Square Enix, DS - 2,319,000 2.
