Japan has enjoyed another busy week of sales, in the run-up to the New Year gift giving season, with sales increasing 48 percent on last week to 124 percent above the weekly average. As expected, though, the launch of the Xbox 360 has contributed little to these statistics, with only 43,970 consoles sold in the first two days, and around 47,191 units of software for a 1.07 attach rate. This compares to 106,867 console sales for the original Xbox’s launch weekend, when there were 156,601 software sales and an attach rate of 1.47. The absence of Dead or Alive 4 from the launch line-up has clearly been a serious problem for the Xbox 360’s launch in Japan, with Ridge Racer 6 becoming the best selling game at number twenty-one in the charts, followed by Perfect Dark Zero at twenty-seven and Need for Speed: Most Wanted at number forty-five. The best selling game of the week was Sony-published role-playing game Rogue Galaxy, from Dark Cloud and Dragon Quest VIII developer Level 5. Its 237,631 unit sales managed to beat out the debut of Mario Kart DS, which had 219,391 sales. These were two of four games in the top ten to sell over 100,000 units, with Sega’s yakuza-themed adventure Ryuu ga Gotoku reporting 134,521 sales and Animal Crossing: Wild World crossing the 100,000 barrier for the third consecutive week, at number four in the charts. With two 100,000+ selling games in the top ten, the Nintendo DS increased its sales once again, with a massive 299,328 consoles sold in just seven days, making for a 59.02 percent share of the market. PSP sales were down to 86,403 units and a 17.04 percent market share, with the PlayStation 2 at 45,893 units and a 9.05 percent share of the market. This pushed the Xbox 360 into fourth place with a 8.67 percent market share. The Game Boy Advance family came next with a 3.78 percent share, then the GameCube with 2.41 percent and the Xbox with 0.03 percent.
