This week's Japanese sales charts show the continuing worldwide problems in sensibly scheduling new releases from week to week. After six new entries in the charts last week, there are only two this week and only one of any significance. The latest in Banpresto’s extremely popular Super Robot Taisen series sold 117,876 units – fairly low for a number one title – but was streets ahead of its nearest rival, with Another Century’s Episode, also by Banpresto, selling just 39,694 units. As a result, sales were down 44 percent from last week, although this is still 70 percent of the weekly average – which is above expectations for this time of year in Japan. However, it should be noted that the unusual number of new releases for this time of year has not yet resulted in any noticeable increase in overall customer numbers. As if to illustrate this, hardware sales are very low at the moment, with the PSP selling just 48,781 units, despite a 33.08 percent market share. This puts Sony’s portable console on top for the second week running, with the PlayStation 2 on a 32.52 percent share, the Nintendo DS on 20.04 percent, the Game Boy Advance at 9.41 percent, the GameCube at 4.69 percent and that Xbox on 0.26 percent.
