With sales down to 63.91 percent of the weekly average, the traditional post-New Year’s lull has hit the Japanese sales charts. However, results still continue to show a modest improvement on last year, with sales of the top 100 titles this week amounting to 831,942 units, compared to 777,482 units at the same time last year. The third of Nintendo’s Brain Training games for DS has remained at the number one spot for the fourth consecutive week, with 100,538 additional sales over the last seven days. The only two new entries are Super Mario Strikers (aka Mario Smash Football) for GameCube at number three with 74,209 sales, and Resident Evil: Deadly Silence for DS at number eight with 20,380 unit sales. These results mean that Nintendo’s iron grip on the charts has remained almost entirely uncontested, with the company publishing a total of seven titles in the top ten. Only one of the ten is for a non-Nintendo format, and for perhaps the first time since the console's launch, this includes not a single PlayStation 2 title. In hardware sales, stock levels for the Nintendo DS have begun to recover, with the console selling 64,515 units this week for a 43.04 percent share of the market. The PSP was second with 38,271 sales and a 25.53 percent market share, followed by the PlayStation 2 at 26,135 units and a 17.43 percent market share. The Game Boy Advance family of consoles accounted for 8.54 percent of the market, with the GameCube at 3.00 percent. This meant that the Xbox 360 once again slipped to last place, with just a 2.41 percent market share and 3,616 unit sales.
