Japanese sales have continued to hold steady this week, just above the weekly average, with Capcom’s latest samurai adventure (to be known as Devil Kings in amended form in the West) selling 88,711 units in its debut. Nintendo’s new baseball title, co-developed by Namco, also performed well with 49,189 units sold. Other new entries performed less well, though, considering the importance of their licenses, with Square Enix’s latest Fullmetal Alchemist title only managing 34,429 units at number four. The performance of the first Yu-Gi-Oh! Nintendo DS title was also somewhat disappointing, with only 31,564 units sold. Despite there being only one major new Nintendo DS release this week, the portable console only strengthened its lead as the best-selling console in Japan. Not only did it sell 41,982 units for a 41.36 percent share of the hardware market, but it also surpassed the PlayStation 2 as the best selling console of the year in Japan. 1,190,762 Nintendo DSes have now been sold this year in Japan, compared to 1,184,584 PlayStation 2 consoles and 1,060,529 PSP handhelds. For this week, the PlayStation 2 was again in second place with 25,980 sales and a 25.60 percent market share, followed by the PSP with 19,043 sales and a 18.76 percent market share. The Game Boy Advance had a 11.16 percent share, followed by the GameCube at 2.95 percent and the Xbox at 0.16 percent.
