Kalypso Acquires Action RPG Demonicon, Other IP From The Games Company

Germany-headquartered game company Kalypso Media said Wednesday that it acquired key IP and development resources from recently-insolvent fellow German outfit The Games Company, including the upcoming action RPG Demonicon. As part of the transaction, 17 employees from TGC's internal development group Silver Style Entertainment will merge with Kalypso's newly-founded Noumena Studios GmbH, which will work on completing the RPG. Kalypso's other studios include Munich-based Realmforge and Guetersloh-based Gaming Minds. The group expects that by the end of the year, the new Noumena Studios will house 35 employees. Former TGC project manager Andre Schmitz joined the new studio as director. Along with acquiring Demonicon, slated for a 2012 global release on Xbox 360 and PC, Kalypso also acquired remaining distribution and publishing rights for former TGC PC titles Simon the Sorcerer 5, Goin' Downtown and Everlight. Kalypso Media Group global managing director Simon Hellwig stated, "Our acquisition of Demonicon and other valuable brands, along with the founding of our third studio, further enhances our already strong product portfolio for 2011 and 2012, solidifying our position as an independent international publisher and developer." Schmitz added, "After a turbulent insolvency, we are very pleased to have Kalypso as a key investor and partner. We are happy that Kalypso will retain the core team -- as they did with the creation of Gaming Minds Studios after purchasing Ascaron's assets."
