Opinion: How will Project 2025 impact game developers?
The Heritage Foundation's manifesto for the possible next administration could do great harm to many, including large portions of the game development community.
This cuts off online features for four games, and follows Sony's May decision to (then temporarily) close down LBP's servers over attacks targeting community members.
The servers for four LittleBigPlanet games across PlayStation 3 and Vita have gone dark for good following a temporary shutdown back in May.
Ultimately, the decision sees the end of online services for LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2, LittleBigPlanet 3 (on PS3), and LittleBigPlanet PS Vita. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 version of LittleBigPlanet and the over 10 million user-created levels it hosts are back online following that earlier shutdown.
It's always a blow when a great game loses its online features, but this is especially true for the LittleBigPlanet series and its robust archive of player-created content.
Still, despite the now permanent shutdown, those earlier LittleBigPlanet games had an impressive run. For reference, the first game in the series, now offline for good, was released all the way back in 2008 for the PS3, meaning its community content was up and running for nearly 13 years.
"We have no doubt that this news will come as a big disappointment to a lot of you, ultimately this is the best way to protect the LittleBigPlanet community and help ensure that our online environment remains safe," explains a statement from the dev team.
