Representatives from British games music firm Bob & Barn have announced Reloop, a Soundforge Direct-X plugin that modifies samples and comforms them to a precise length into which looped samples must fit in order to function correctly in console systems. If an audio sample does not conform to this unit of measure, called a ‘byte boundary’, Bob & Barn note that the result will be “dodgy, clicking audio.” However, the new Reloop plugin helps make this usually time intensive process of conformity more user friendly by streamlining the process for development on both current and next-generation console platforms, as well as the PC. In addition, Reloop also negates the need to use different versions of the same audio file for each platform, saving valuable project time and money. The plugin, which is currently available immediately for download, was developed with the assistance of a doctor of digital signal processing from Cambridge University, Dylan Menzies, who spent six months perfecting the algorithms for Bob & Barn at Zenprobe Software. Menzies explains:“Reloop incorporates an advanced signal processing design that modifies the whole loop, rather than using the conventional approach with cross fade regions that can generate noticeable artifacts. The DirectX protocol has had to be stretched to accommodate this technique but the result is a plugin that will operate seamlessly within the Soundforge batch processing framework.”
