Cambridge, UK-based Geomerics, a technology development company that targets video game developers with its expertise and specialized research into geometric algebra, has announced new Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) funding to continue development of its specialized lighting technology for animation. The development will take place as part of a collaboration between Geomerics and Cambridge University. Officials note that the two-year collaborative research and development project is to be funded by £180,000 ($356,035) from DTI, of which £100,000 ($197,863) will go to Geomerics. A key element of Geomerics lighting solution is that it achieves a greater sense of real world accuracy by incorporating the effects of all of the bounced light in a scene, leading to a dramatic improvement in the level of perceived realism. Going forward, Geomerics and Cambridge University will be applying their expertise and IP in the field of ‘geometric algebra’ to tackle problems in animation. Geometric algebra is a powerful mathematical language, which has been applied successfully to a vast range of problems, from motion, capture to cosmology. “I am delighted that we been awarded this grant,” commented Geomerics’ CEO, Chris Doran. “Our company philosophy is to be a driving force for bringing new technology to the games industry, and this grant will help ensure that a key component of our research and development roadmap gets off to a flying start. And we could not ask for a better partner than the Cambridge University Engineering Department, which has driven many innovations in this field.”
