New Zealand-based Skymatter announced the availability of a free trial of its 3D modeling software Mudbox 1.0.4, including all of the capabilities found in the full professional version. Mudbox, which was used on films like King Kong and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, is a sculpting, detailing, and design tool developed by a number of vfx and game industry experts. The application is a high resolution, brush-based 3D sculpting software specifically designed for the professional digital sculptor. It's a standalone application that was released in December 2006, and according to Skymatter has become a tool used by various visual effects and game development companies. In addition, the software's toolkit integrates seamlessly with other popular development tools such as Autodesk, Maya, and Softimage|XSI. "We're exhilarated by the interest expressed in Mudbox from artists requiring production tools that improve workflow, speed and integration," commented Skymatter co-founder Tibor Madjar. "We're more motivated and committed than ever to providing digital tools that transform the way professionals and consumers create and interact with digital content."
