German networking solution provider Helios has partnered with Linux package provider Terra Soft to offer a freely downloadable version of Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) specially engineered for the PlayStation 3, specifically adding server functionality to Sony's console. The stripped down YDL makes available a lightweight, low overhead server environment for the PlayStation 3, while simultaneously offering what Helios describes as “a test-drive platform for its file, print, PDF and image server software.” According to the company, the software can be installed in less than 6 minutes, and full installation instructions can be found on the Helios website. Once installed, the software provides a Linux server OS complete with DHCP network settings, support for Java 1.5 and AppleTalk enhanced kernel. The install also includes an improved dedicated server operating system with optimized performance, with Helios noting that the software makes available 40 percent more memory. The release of the simplified YDL for the PlayStation 3 follows the January partnership between Terra Soft and multi-core development platform provider RapidMind to help developers create applications for the PlayStation 3 running Yellow Dog Linux and other Cell-based hardware. "Our Linux distribution for PS3 is another milestone in our support for the Open Source Community", explained Helmut Tschemernjak, CEO and President of HELIOS Software. "And bringing our software to the PS3 underlines in the most obvious way, that HELIOS Software runs everywhere: Beginning with UNIX and Intel Linux to Mac OS X, Windows, and now the PS3 Entertainment Center".
