Following better than expected hardware and software results for the PlayStation 3 launch in the UK (other European sales data is not currently available), the Australian launch of the console appears to have resulted in slower sales than both the Xbox 360 and Wii. According to national newspaper The Age, which previously described the Australian launch as “feeble”, over 20,000 PlayStation 3s were sold during the first three days. The newspaper also quotes an unnamed Sony Computer Entertainment Australia spokesperson as saying that, “The combined sales of hardware, peripherals and software generated in excess of $25 million of retail spending.” Even so, the launch sales figures compare slightly negatively to the Xbox 360, which sold over 30,000 units in its first four days and broke the then record for a console launch in the country. This record was subsequently broken again by the Wii launch last December, which sold 32,901 units in its first four days. However, the eventual four day figure for the PlayStation 3 may be closer to these figures when further data is released by analyst group GfK.
