Following comments from Sony reported last week that indicated possible plans for a PlayStation 3 model with a larger capacity hard drive, a new report has emerged that lends further credence to this possibility. "For users who vigorously store (games and other entertainment content) in the PS3, 20-giga is probably going to be too small, and even 60-giga may not be big enough eventually," commented Sony representative Satoshi Fukuoka to Reuters. Rumors have persisted that Sony plans to release a version of its latest console with an 80GB hard drive, as compared to the 60GB and recently discontinued 20GB versions available today, though nothing has been officially announced. However, according to the report, future changes to the PlayStation 3 need not be limited to just the hard drive, save for a few notable exceptions. "We are not likely to change its core components and functions such as the Cell, RSX, Blu-ray drive and network capability. But outside that realm, addition and deletion is quite possible," added Fukuoka. As expected, however, Sony was reluctant to comment specifically on its future plans when asked by Gamasutra. "We are constantly looking at new technologies, services and configurations to meet the evolving needs of our PlayStation gamers,” an SCEA representative commented in a prepared statement, “but at this time we have no announcement regarding any changes in our PS3 product offering in North America."
