As the drama at Take-Two Interactive’s shareholders' meeting unfurled yesterday, the much heralded debut of the first teaser trailer for PS3/Xbox 360 release Grand Theft Auto IV took place last night on Rockstar Games' website. Although a release date of October 16th, 2007 (October 19th in Europe) was announced for the game as long ago as May 2005, nothing has been seen or said of the game until this week, other than a mysterious website coutdown. Along with Halo 3, the Rockstar North-created title is widely predicted to be amongst the best selling games of the year. The short trailer has caused some online confusion with its Koyaanisqatsi-inspired cinematography and soundtrack, in what initially appears to be a modern day New York setting. However, closer examination of the trailer images suggest that the city pictured is in fact Liberty City from Grand Theft Auto III. The lead character in the trailer appears to be of Russian or Eastern Europe extraction, but no other details are available beyond the relatively impressive nature of the game’s graphics – using Rockstar’s propriety RAGE graphics engine first utilized in its Table Tennis. There had been intense speculation on the setting for the new sequel, although with Rockstar refusing to provide any concrete details - and it is likely that current impressions of the game provide a far from complete picture of the final product.
