Opinion: How will Project 2025 impact game developers?
The Heritage Foundation's manifesto for the possible next administration could do great harm to many, including large portions of the game development community.
Naughty Dog's seminal sequel The Last of Us Part II has sold over 10 million copies over two years.
Naughty Dog has revealed that in the two years since the release of The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation 4, the game has managed to sell over 10 million copies.
This sales landmark comes shortly after Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a graphical remake of the first game in the series, now renamed The Last of Us Part I.
Hitting 10 million copies sold in just two years is a pretty impressive feat. Digging back through our archives, multiplatform indie games like Hades only sold 1 million copies in that time period, while Mortal Kombat 11 sold 12 million copies in that timeframe.
Cuphead, which was a console exclusive for Xbox (but was also available on Steam at launch) sold 5 million copies in two years. If we're just comparing first-party PlayStation games, Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima sold 8 million copies in just under two years' time.
It'll be interesting to see if Naughty Dog's prestige sequel will sell as well as Sony Santa Monica's God of War reboot, which managed to sell 19.5 million copies in three years before being ported to PC.
That makes 10 million a pretty respectable number, but it'll be interesting to see how SIE looks to push those metrics in the years ahead. This year, it indicated that the company's financial future would include more ports of first-party exclusive games to PC.
Sales of The Last of Us Part II are likely also to be buoyed by the upcoming HBO series based on the game. During Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest broadcast, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann revealed that he directed an episode of the upcoming show, and that voice actor Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson had joined the show's cast (not as their characters from the game, just to be clear).
