Buoyed by the DVD release of the Star Wars: Episode III movie, LucasArts’ Star Wars: Battlefront II has prevented Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories from debuting at number one in the UK sales charts. Battlefront II now seems likely to become the best-selling Star Wars game of all time, at least in the UK, but the success of Liberty City Stories is more difficult to judge, with the game selling in significant numbers, but unconfirmed reports suggesting that in terms of hardware, the PSP is still being outsold by the Nintendo DS this week - stock shortages for the PSP may be a factor in this. The PlayStation 2 version of Capcom's Resident Evil 4 has had a slightly disappointing first week in the charts, with the title again failing to find an appropriately large audience for its increasingly voluminous range of plaudits and awards. The entry of WWII shoot ‘em-up Call of Duty 2 at number nine will be seen as more promising by publisher Activision, considering the single format and the large amount of competition at this time of year. The latest console version of PC hit The Sims has received a middling response from consumers at number ten, while other victims of the Christmas games rush lurk just outside the top ten, with Civilization IV at number eleven and Age of Empires III at number twelve. Mass market karaoke title SingStar ‘80s has entered at number twenty-two, while Crash Tag Team Racing debuts at number twenty-eight.
