Organizers of the upcoming Gamercamp festival in Toronto announced that this year's event will feature more than 30 speakers promoting culturally significant interactive digital works, including serious games and educational applications. The two-day festival will host over 25 presentations, sessions, and interactive demostrations, along with a gaming art exhibition, a retro-themed games center, and an arcade area dedicated to independently developed games. "The generation that grew up with games don't see the medium being for children only," said Gamercamp co-founder Mark Rabo. "As adults, this generation now is working to make games more accessible to a broader audience. For example, there are games for yoga, brain training, and even playing in a band with real instruments and research is showing that the play mechanics of games improve the learning process." Fellow co-founder Jaime Woo adds: "I’m expecting Torontonians to be surprised when they realize the activity happening in their own city, especially in the independent scene, which is pushing the boundaries of games, deconstructing the medium, and championing inclusiveness from voices not traditionally heard in the mainstream. "This is an exciting time in the global games community, reminiscent of the the indie film movement of the ‘90s, and it’s amazing that Toronto is in the forefront with cities like New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles." Gamercamp will be held on November 13th and 14th at the Toronto Underground Cinema and George Brown College. Tickets are available at Gamercamp's website.
