The belated Japanese release of Yoshi’s Island DS has remained on top of the nation’s sales charts for the second week running in a week lacking in any major new releases and suffering below average sales as a result. The highest new entry was a new entry in the the DS Mojipittan series from Namco Bandai at number two, with almost 72,000 unit sales. The game is similar to a Japanese version of Scrabble, with previous games in the series having appeared on the PlayStation 2, Game Boy Advance and PSP. The second highest new entry is a sequel to Koei’s anime license, the visual novel style game Kiniro no Corda 2 for PlayStation 2 at number five, with just over 34,500 unit sales. Meanwhile, the first iteration of popular dating sim Tokimeki Memorial on the Nintendo DS entered the charts at number eight, with just over 29,000 units sold. Perhaps the most notable aspect of the charts continues to be the increasing success of third party titles on Nintendo formats, with only three first party titles in the top ten. Undoubtedly Nintendo’s greatest current achievement, though, is the total dominance of its formats in the overall charts. This week, only five games in the whole top fifty are not for Nintendo formats (three PlayStation 2 games, one PlayStation 3 game and one PSP title). Hardware sales totals have been as unremarkable as software, although the total for the Nintendo DS was up to 121,630 from 108,631 the previous week. The Wii, which is still essentially sold out across Japan, regained its number two spot from the PSP this week with 67,070 unit sales compared to 43,769. The PlayStation 3 saw sales fall by over 10,000 units to 21,635, although it kept well ahead of the increasingly sidelined PlayStation 2 at 13,321 units. Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 continued its downward spiral following the exit of Blue Dragon from the software charts at just 2,910 units sold. The Game Boy Advance family of consoles sold 1,293 units and the GameCube 367.
