Q/ Please in a couple of lines, give the readers the overview and backdrop story to the game!?
A/ When a mistreated child with impossible powers threatens to reshape the world, a hero’s disappearance kicks off a grand adventure - and a battle for survival!
Q/ What are the overall tasks and objectives gamers have to face?
A/ Granted special powers by an omniscient computer, players will travel the world via Airship and face deadly foes in Turn-Based combat to overcome a tragic villain. And, perhaps, also save him…
Q/ Why do you feel there is such a love and passion for retro styled games?
A/ Retro-style games provide an experience that players can’t get anywhere else. Focused gameplay, a unique form of storytelling and a charming aesthetic which still allows room for the player’s imagination. Q/ Why did you decide to place 8 Bit Adventures 2 onto consoles?
A/ After such a successful launch on PC, I wanted to satisfy fan demand for a console release. Consoles are the home of the JRPG genre and an ideal place to experience the epic story of 8-Bit Adventures 2.
Q/ What are you most proud of with 8 Bit Adventures 2 and is it likely we shall see a 3rd title?
A/ I’m proud of the lovable, relatable cast of characters we’ve created, and their ability to connect with players. I have some bold plans for a 3rd game, and hope to remake the 1st 8-Bit Adventures as well! Q/ The game takes a lot of influence from the past. Which titles inspired 8-Bit Adventures 2?
A/ Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IX and X, and MOTHER 3 were our biggest inspirations - and this can be felt in our storytelling & battle mechanics. But we applied lessons from across the JRPG genre.
Q/ What do you hope gamers will take away from playing 8-Bit Adventures 2?
A/ I wanted to capture the optimistic tone of Hironobu Sakaguchi’s work on Final Fantasy; uplifting the player and providing a sense of hope for the future, in spite of hardship or tragedy. I think we all need that!

My name is Joshua Hallaran and I’m an Australian indie developer, working under the company name Critical Games since 2011. I’m best known for creating story-driven, Japanese-style RPGs – most notably the 8-Bit Adventures series and Tales Across Time. To create 8-Bit Adventures 2, I worked with talented freelancers: artist Jerram Fahey, composer Sebastian Cruz, and programmer Sufyan Noor. Our promotional art was created by Ryan Jampole.
