Maximilian Scherer :

14th Jan 2025, Computer Science professor and indie developer Maximilian Scherer today revealed his second game Card Coder on Steam. This novel card-building roguelike combines tactical card battles with strategic inventory management to empower players to create their own custom cards during play. Players combine four different types of ability components (trigger, condition, selector and effect) to define the exact behaviour of their card. With over 10 billion possibilities, players can create (almost) any card they could dream of.

"Build your cards to fit your playstyle -- not the other way round." This was Prof. Scherer's driving motivation in developing Card Coder and the main innovation and USP over existing deck-builders. This customization extends to the visuals of the cards. Players can freely adjust the artwork of their cards by choosing between beautiful pixelart characters included in the game, or any images located on their own computer. The card battles themselves reward tactical positioning and building synergies and combos on the board. The default game mode is a rogulike run, with a series of increasingly difficult battles. After each battle the player can loot gold, new cards and components. The shopping and card-building phase in between battles lets players upgrade, rework and finetune their cards and their whole deck.
The trailer is now available on Youtube:

Card Coder is planned to release in late 2025 / early 2026. Players can wishlist the game on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3355940/Card_Coder/ .
