From the Creators of Backpack Hero: Moon Watch – Time-Stop Horde Survival Roguelike

September 10, 2024 – Next game from Backpack Hero creators just announced!
Moon Watch, a time-stop horde survival roguelike is coming to Steam Early Access later this year. You can try the free web demo on Itch now!

After the success of Backpack Hero (0.5 million units sold), the developers are back with a new project that combines tactical survival gameplay with strategic deck-building. Unlike typical horde survival games, Moon Watch has a unique, sequential flow: move, stop, strategize, and act. The game encourages thoughtful planning, where you freeze time, carefully choose your next move, and then unleash powerful combos to survive the waves of enemies. This loop of action and pause sets it apart from traditional, more frenetic bullet-hell experiences.

For Jasper Cole, the lead developer of a tiny team Jaspel, the game is a blend of inspirations: “We love Vampire Survivors and Slay the Spire, so combining them seemed like the natural thing to do. But we struggled with how to bring it all together until we looked at Superhot – that time-stop mechanic, where the world pauses when you stop moving, was the missing piece." He explains, "We’re curious to see if players like it and what we can improve, so we’re inviting everyone to give the demo a try."

“Jasper, Calvin, and Felix are quietly pushing the boundaries of indie gaming,” says Jakub Radkowski, CEO at Pretty Soon – the publisher behind Backpack Hero and Moon Watch. "With Backpack Hero, they invented a whole new genre – the inventory management roguelike. There was nothing like it before. The game sold really well and Jaspel could have easily made a sequel or something similar. But instead... they invented a new genre again.  We're super excited that they came to us for a second time after our work together on Backpack Hero."

About Moon Watch:

In Moon Watch, you start as a badass vampire hunter disguised as a nun, wielding advanced time-stop technology to fight hordes of vampires, ghouls and undead. Your mission: defeat the Vampire Lord on the dark side of the moon. Every second counts, and every decision could mean the difference between survival and defeat.

  • Survive the Horde – Battle endless waves of enemies using your skills, time control, and tactics to outwit your foes.

  • Sequential Flow – Move, stop, strategize, then act. Plan each move carefully, as freezing time opens up opportunities for devastating combos.

  • Build Your Deck – Collect unique cards and relics, refining your deck to suit your strategy and playstyle.

  • Grow in Power – Unlock powerful abilities and items as you fight through the Vampire Lord’s stronghold with each run.

About the Developer:
Jaspel is the humble indie crew behind Backpack Hero and Moon Watch. The remote, three-person studio from USA and Germany is: Jasper 'TheJaspel', Felix 'Binary Counter', and Calvin 'Gangs Robin'. They’ve been doing quirky games through jams and itch.io, and formed their own studio in 2022. Backpack Hero turned into a very big success, but it doesn't really change how they roll: in a very tiny team.

About the Publisher:
Pretty Soon is an indie games publisher on a simple mission: to be the best choice for solo developers and small teams. Their released and upcoming titles include Backpack Hero, Havendock, Backrooms Media, Primal Planet, and Moon Watch!
