gamescom congress 2024 is looking for topics and speakers

Cologne, 29 May 2024: Society, business, science, education and culture benefit from the creativity and expertise of the games industry in a variety of ways. This makes games a major driver for innovation that contributes to our democratic society. The potential of computer games will be demonstrated at the gamescom congress on 22 August 2024 in Cologne. Topic proposals can be submitted here now. The Call for Submissions ends on 23 June 2024.

The gamescom congress will take place for the 16th time in 2024 as part of Gamescom, the world's largest games event, and invites experts from a wide range of business sectors as well as culture, education, politics, science, journalism and game development. Last year, the congress attracted around 800 guests on site and 170,000 viewers in the live stream. In 50 talks, panels and workshops, over 100 international experts showed how games can contribute to social and technological progress.

For this year's edition, practical examples or current research projects from a wide range of disciplines can be submitted as long as they demonstrate the innovative power of games and game technologies. The organisers are seeking contributions particularly relating to this year's focus topics ‘Democracy’ and ‘Artificial Intelligence’. The proposed topics should, for example, provide answers to the following questions:

- How can games strengthen our democratic society?

- What contribution do games make to democratic discourse?

- How can politics, administration and NGOs utilise games in their work?

- What potential does artificial intelligence with games open up for other areas of life?

- How can fake news and hate speech be restrained with the help of AI?

- How can games support children in need of support and encourage them to learn?

- What contribution can games make to sustainable development, like climate protection?

- How do games strengthen the cultural diversity in our society?

- How do industry and SMEs use games technologies to drive innovation and reinforce competition?

Instructions for the submission process:

- The proposed topics should highlight the potential and challenges of computer and video games and should not require any specialised knowledge in the field of game development.

- The submission of a topic requires a meaningful title and a brief description. A more detailed presentation of the proposed topic is not required at the time of submission.

- The submission phase ends on 23 June 2024.
