Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), developer of Star Citizen and Squadron 42, is a new kind of independent studio dedicated to delivering AAA games outside the established publisher system. What:

Star Citizen’s Ship Showdown is a celebration of galactic proportions, where fans from around the world vote for their favorite flyable or drivable vehicles in the ‘verse. Community members campaigned for their favorite ships and ground vehicles with their own original creations including videos, songs, miniatures, photos, paintings, and more during the Community Call phase of the event that ended Aug. 13. Their creative submissions can be found archived on the Community Hub, helping inspire future creative submissions.

Voting is now underway for the first round in this year’s aerospace rumble, with 16 ships going head-to-head across eight diverse categories. This year’s competition draws competitors new and old, featuring classics like the Gladiator bomber to recent additions like the trusty Ursa Medivac frontline medical support vehicle, highlighting the variety and diversity of vehicles currently available in-game. All players with an account in good standing can log in to the official site and vote for their favorite ships at any time through Aug. 22, with the next round of the top eight ships beginning on Aug. 23. After the top four ships are determined later in August, all current players that possess the top four ships in-game will receive a limited-edition ship paint and corresponding manufacturer’s poster to show off their ship’s popularity. The final winning vehicle for this year's Ship Showdown will be commemorated with an ultimate prize: the first official event banner, which can be placed as a decoration in player’s hangars following the release of Alpha 3.24. This reward will be granted to all active accounts, with no requirement to possess the winning ship, and all rewards will be distributed during the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE) in November.

As part of the annual community celebration, CIG is welcoming new players with free access to download and play Star Citizen, as well as free access to all top 16 ships through Aug. 22. These ships will be available directly from the ASOP terminals at any starport, granting both green and grizzled pilots the ability to try out eligible ships before choosing which to vote for.
