[Karlsruhe, Germany] July 15, 2024 — Get ready for a thrill ride! Independent studio Reija and publishing platform indie.io are pleased to announce that Shell Runner has launched into Early Access on Steam today. For fans of heart-pounding PvE extraction shooters, Shell Runner blends tactical combat with high-stakes looting, ensuring an edge-of-the-seat experience.

Play Shell Runner on Steam now.

Step into the chaotic world of 2045, where megacorporations rule the urban jungle. As a mercenary Shell Runner, players control lifelike Shells (remotely controlled machine bodies) to take on dangerous PvE extraction missions. With over 20 unique Shells to choose from, each with its strengths and shortfalls, players will navigate the gritty dystopian underworld where danger lurks around every corner. Whether playing solo or teaming up in co-op mode with friends, every mission features a procedurally generated map, dynamic gameplay, and intense, handcrafted boss encounters.

Utilizing a diverse arsenal of weapons and strategic modifiers to survive each encounter, players must adapt their tactics to the ever-shifting landscape of corporate intrigue and urban warfare. Losing a Shell means losing all of your hard-earned gear and loot–meaning the stakes couldn’t be higher, and every decision counts.

"We tried something new by blending PvE extraction and looter shooter mechanics with co-op gameplay, aiming to create a unique experience set in a gritty cyberpunk future," says Christos Doukas, lead developer at Reija.

"Usually, extraction shooters are focused on PvP, which makes the whole experience less approachable for many people. We wanted single-player and co-op fans to experience the thrill and high-octane action of a full loot-permadeath extraction shooter without the stress of PvP components. That doesn't mean Shell Runner is easy. On the contrary, we aimed to stay true to the genre, making Shell Runner immersive and challenging. You'll have to make tough decisions at every turn, whether it's prioritizing loot, rescuing your buddy, pushing to complete the mission, or retreating to fight another day."

As Early Access journey kicks off, players can look forward to content to come, including new bosses, weapons, gadgets, and levels. The Reija team is committed to regularly improving gameplay systems and introducing fresh features and looks forward to involving players in shaping the game’s future.

Shell Runner is now available on Steam for USD $14.99. Join the Shell Runner community on Discord for updates and support.
