Quotes from the Dev

“This release represents our “spiritual” graduation from early access to the 1.0 release state. We’ll continue to make improvements, but we feel we finally reached the visual aspiration we originally had when we first prototyped and pitched this game”

“We’ve tuned this game so that it looks its absolute best for each platform. This means that we can both continue to support the “ancient” Quest 1, while pushing the limits on Quest 3. On PC VR, we can support your basic 7-year old potato PC and still crank up the resolution and effects on the latest hardware. Thanks to some incredible work by the dev team over the last 4 years, we can have our cake and eat it too.”

How exactly did the team pull off the incredible feat of supporting post-processing on mobile hardware? Salmi Games responded:

“That’s the funny thing, when you go on Unity forums and ask how to support Post-Processing on mobile VR, everyone just tells you to forget about it, there’s not enough power on the headset, you will never hit framerate, etc. Well, due to the unique nature of our game, with a low poly count and extremely low usage of textures, we could actually afford the overhead of a full-screen post-processing pass. It’s still very expensive, and we still had to make a number of improvements and optimizations, but we managed to squeeze it in. On Quest 2, we can run these effects at 72 fps. Even on Quest 1 it runs at a playable framerate, with an extremely loose definition of “playable”. But it’s there and playable!

“The game was originally designed with the hard constraints of Quest 1. Our unique inline/outline art style derived from this limitation. What we don’t do with textures, we more than make up with particle effects, outline effects and the bloom and HDR post-processing pass”
